In the name of “equality,” many school policies perpetuate inequalities. They provide benefits (e.g., a senior trip for a fee) to students who are already advantaged, while keeping low-income students—the most disadvantaged—from these kinds of supports. Policies like parking fees, after-school detention, or homework rules that ignore students’ home contexts amount to punishing them for poverty and must be eliminated, argues author Paul Gorski.
