Join Class of 2022 ASCD Emerging Leader Donna Neary as she shares her work as a Newcomer ESL Specialist and Social Studies Teacher for the Hamilton County Schools in Chattanooga, Tennessee in two weeks, on Wednesday, May 3rd at 6 p.m. e.t.!

Donna designs partnerships with community organizations to create evidence of learning OR meaningful learning experiences for high school immigrant-origin students that promote a sense of belonging. As a second-career teacher, She brings her experience as a public historian to teaching social studies to ESL students by designing authentic learning experiences for her students to introduce them to their new home cities and towns.

Donna's approach to teaching multilingual students is focused on agency and encouraging learners to trust themselves as experts in their own learning. She encourages teachers to do the same by providing direct links and connections to places outside of the school, supports students as they navigate their new communities and promotes agency and, importantly, a sense of belonging.
