As educators, we know that developing literacy skills is crucial for student success, but finding engaging and effective ways to teach those skills can be a challenge. I experienced this firsthand as a first grade teacher. That's why when I began teaching visual art after 6 years in the general ed classroom, I couldn't stop thinking about ways to integrate visual art into the content I'd struggled to teach before.
After much research and experimentation, I discovered the power of integrating traditional hands-on literacy centers with visual art to create what I now call "artful literacy centers." These centers provide a unique opportunity for students to engage in interdisciplinary learning, connecting different subject areas through artistic expression.
Through the use of artful literacy centers, students are not only engaging with materials and objects, but also using artistic elements and principles to enhance their understanding and expression of concepts. The intentional integration of the arts into the curriculum helps students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as creativity and self-expression.
But what exactly are artful literacy centers, and how do they work? Let me explain.
It's important to note that all artful centers are hands-on centers, but not all hands-on centers are artful. The intentional integration of the arts into the curriculum is what sets Artful Centers apart and provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in interdisciplinary learning, connecting different subject areas through artistic expression.
This program is not only a creative and engaging approach to learning but also a practical and effective one. By providing students with hands-on, artful activities, the program makes learning more accessible and enjoyable. The use of art in the curriculum also helps students to remember and retain information more effectively. In addition, the Artful Literacy Centers™ program is designed to meet specific learning goals, such as improving literacy skills, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and enhancing creativity and self-expression.
the Artful Literacy Centers™ program is designed for easy implementation and does not require any specific art skills. Any teacher, regardless of their background, can use these centers in their classroom. The program provides step-by-step instructions and all the necessary materials to make it easy for teachers to incorporate artful learning into their curriculum. Additionally, the program is flexible and allows for customization, so teachers can tailor it to meet the specific needs and interests of their students. The program can stand alone or be layered onto any literacy approach.
Last week, I had the opportunity to teach the introductory workshop on the Artful Literacy Centers™ program to a school near Jackson, MS. As I walked around the room, observing the teachers and their reactions to the program, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and excitement. Seeing the teachers engaged and eager to learn about the program was a great feeling, and it was made even better when the principal approached me after the workshop. He told me that in his many years as an educator, he had never seen his teachers so excited about a program before. Hearing this feedback was incredibly rewarding, and it confirmed for me that the Artful Literacy Centers™ program is making a real impact in the lives of both students and teachers alike.
Together, we can help students discover the joy of learning through art.

Artful Literacy Centers Are Intentional
Artful Literacy Centers™ is a unique program that integrates visual art into traditional hands-on literacy centers, with plans to incorporate other art forms in the future. The program includes 15 different centers, each designed to involve students in experiential learning that allows them to physically interact with materials and objects to understand concepts and develop skills. While hands-on centers can be found in many subject areas, Artful Centers take a hands-on approach to learning while intentionally integrating artistic elements and principles into the curriculum.
Artful Literacy Centers Are Practical and Effective
The Artful Literacy Centers™ program is designed to meet a variety of learning goals, including improving literacy skills, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and enhancing creativity and self-expression. These centers allow for differentiation, as students can approach tasks in different ways and at different levels of complexity. This program is not only a creative and engaging approach to learning but also a practical and effective one. Artful Literacy Centers Are Impactful
Through my work with schools in Mississippi, I have witnessed firsthand how the Artful Literacy Centers™ program can benefit students. They become excited to come to class and engage in the hands-on, artful activities, developing not only important literacy skills but also confidence, creativity, and a love for learning. At its core, this is about the whole child.Last week, I had the opportunity to teach the introductory workshop on the Artful Literacy Centers™ program to a school near Jackson, MS.
