Our members would love to meet you. Tell us about yourself.
Hey there! My name is Meltonya Wakefield (she/her). I am a program coordinator at ASCD in Alexandria VA. I was born and raised in the DC Metro area. Currently, I am curious about how our reality will change once the pandemic is officially over. Something tells me "normal" will not be what we thought it was. 🤔
I'm looking forward to connecting with you!
Hi! My name is Tara Laskowski (she/her), and I am a senior editor for Educational Leadership magazine at ASCD. I live in the D.C. metro area with my husband, nine-year-old son, and one old and cranky cat. I'm interested in hearing from our members what kind of content they'd like to see in EL magazine!
I'm Bob Briggs (he/him) Regional Partner Manager in the Northeast. I live in Fulton, NY in Central New York. I'm curious about the long term effects the pandemic will have on daily school operations.
Howdy! I'm Lori Eastman (she/her) and am Director of Programming for Events at ASCD. I live in the Albany, NY area with my husband, nine year old son, and six year old daughter. I'm curious about what things we will continue with in education because of the pandemic and what things will go back to they way they were. Will virtual/remote learning become a choice within districts?
Hi I am Masie (she/her)! I am a graphic designer in Alexandria VA. One thing I'm curious about is how many ways can I cook food in a rice cooker?
Bonjur! Thomas Lytle here. I'm the Creative Director here at ASCD! I live in the DC Metro Area. I'm curious about average speed of an unladen swallow.
Hi everyone! I'm Jéri (juhREE). My pronouns are she/her/hers. I'm located in DC, but from Pittsburgh. One thing I'm curious about these days is herbs and vegetables that I'm able to grow indoors.
Hi everyone! I'm Donnie English (she/her) located in Washington, D.C. My current role is content specialist (product marketing, if we're getting fancy). I'm curious about why are there stems on a wine glass.
HI all! I'm Jen Bean (she/her) located in western PA, near Pittsburgh. My role is as Implementation Manager for digital products. I'm curious about a lot of things these days, many of which are related to best ways to fire and glaze my pottery.
Welcome to the ASCD Professional Learning Community! I'm Walter McKenzie, ASCD senior director for Constituent Services, and I am excited for the launch of this new approach to making the most of your connection to ASCD! Originally from Boston (city of champions and hub of the universe), I reside in northern Virginia just outside Washington, D.C. Looking forward to getting to know you as we work together!
Hi there! My name is Tracy McKee (she/her), and I am a Sr Product Manager at ASCD. I live in Northern Virginia in Fairfax County. I am curious about mental effects of Covid-19 and what the new normal will look like.
Hi everyone! My name Megan Power (she/her). I am a 2016 Emerging Leader from sunny San Diego, CA. In my current role I am a co-founder and a Learning Experience Designer of Design39Campus, a public learner-centered school. I am curious about so many things. If I had to pick one at this very moment it would be... how is everyone doing and what has been challenging in our current situation and what has been surprising?
Good morning, Megan, and welcome to the ASCD Professional Learning Community! As you know, I'm doing well and I'm glad you are, too! My biggest challenge is also my biggest opportunity, to rethink and reinvent how we serve educators and the children they teach! This platform is one of the answers to that question. I am so glad you are here!
Welcome Megan (@mpower39)! We're so glad you've joined us. Working from home everyday has been a challenge for me. As much as I disliked the commute, I miss the separation of work life and home life.
Hi, I'm Cindy Assini (she/her/hers). I supervise social studies and GT from K-12 in Hillsborough, NJ. My most important title is mom, though. I'm curious about how people stayed engaged with education in meaningful, manageable ways while home on family leave.
CIndy, welcome to the ASCD Professional Learning Community! It is our sincere hope that this platform will provide an additional conduit for staying connected and supporting educator professional learning. Jump right in...I know you have a lot to contribute! 😊
HI, I'm Bill Dodds from McHenry, IL. I am Associate Director of IL ASCD and have been with our IL ASCD Affiliate as a board member or employee since 1985. I look forward to meeting folx on the ascdcommunity and hope to make new connections for our membership and other educators in IL and other states. In IL we are addressing the "unfinished learning" issue for students, teachers, administrators and parents through our virtual live and asynchronous models at www.illinoisascd.org. Our upcoming virtual journal will have the theme "Silver Linings" in which we look for the positives our educators have been able to accomplish in the year since the Covid model of education took hold.
Bill it's great to have you on board! You bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the ASCD Professional Learning Community! Looking forward to mixing it up for the good of the profession and children everywhere! 😊
Thanks, Walter. You are our inspiration at ASCD for the ideas for forming virtual liaisons with other educators in affiliates around the world. I think you know that you are our "go-to guy" for any ASCD questions or needs we may encounter!
@Bill_Dodds you make it all worthwhile - you know I feel the same! 🏆️
Hello, I'm Ryan Nevius from the Illinois Affiliate. I am our Executive Director and have been with IL ASCD in various positions for over 10 years now! I'm most curious about how schools and professional development will change once we're past all the COVID protocols. I look forward to connecting with everyone on this platform and maybe even face to face again some day!
Ryan thank you for joining us and helping us prepare to launch at our June annual conference! It's exciting to consider all the possibilities for ASCD affiliates on our ASCD Professional Learning Community! Here's to lots of learning and growing ahead! 😎
Welcome, @mpower39 @Rnevius @Bill_Dodds @cindyassini !! Happy to have each of you joining the ASCD Professional Learning Community platform!
Welcome @cindyassini! It's great to have you in the Community. I too wonder how educators are staying engaged. I would love to hear how elementary teams that are still teaching virtually are using their planning time and if they are as collaborative as they were when they were in the building. What are your hearing from the teachers your supervise?
Nice to “meet” you, Meltonya! Anecdotally, I think collaboration has gone up due to the need to adapt lessons online. In addition, we have a half day schedule that provides office hours that can be used for teacher collaboration during contracted time. I also have some specific examples of how highly effective educators are mentoring others during that time and high-functioning PLCs are taking their collaboration to the next level.
Thank you! I am excited for this new tool to connect with others, have some deep and impactful conversations, and share helpful resources!
Rethinking and reimagining are my specialities! I am happy to be here and look forward to many rich conversations that ultimately support our students whole child growth!
It takes some getting used to and then can be wonderful once you get into a routine. I hope it is going smoother for you each day!
This has been a big wondering by so many across the country (and world).
